My name is Miguel Rodriguez.
Monster Island Resort has been growing steadily since I recorded my first episode in July of 2010 (a mere five months preceding this writing). I am pleased with the amount of positive feedback I’ve received after so short a time. I have had the idea for this show brewing in my brain for years–ever since the inception of Monster Island Resort as a Myspace Group in the prehistory of web 2.0–but it took living in a new city with no friends, as well as the encouragement of some friends online, to spur me to action. Monster Island Resort is my love letter to the horror genre in all its forms. My definition of horror is so broad that you will hear me talk about a variety of topics: Japanese giant monster movies, ancient mythology and art, theater, silent horrors, Classic Universal Monsters, Science fiction, slashers, schlock, sleaze and exploitation.
Ever since I was a kid I loved monsters. I don’t remember the name of my elementary school, but I do remember stopping at a corner store before school every morning to buy gummy worms and packs of Fright Flicks trading cards. I remember spending endless times in the library flipping through old issues of Famous Monsters of Filmland or books on old Universal horror movies or Godzilla movies. In other words, immersing myself in horror art, books, and film has been a big part of who I was growing up and who I’ve become.
The Monster Island Resort is our vacation from reality for very brief moments. I started this show to share my love of horror with anybody who presses play or takes the time to read a blog entry. I hope every episode or bit of writing can act as the beginning of a conversation. I purposely keep the episodes short and sweet. Take the time to comment or make a suggestion. I would love to hear from you!
